The Ford Motor Company Fund, the philanthropic arm of Ford Motor Company, and the Charles H. Wright Museum are offering hair salons in the greater Detroit area the opportunity to compete for a grant of $ 10,000.
The Barber Shop Challenge is part of the Ford Men of Courage Program, an initiative to build communities by advancing the narrative of black men through storytelling, educational events, intergenerational forums, community vision sessions and other events organized.
The grant is part of the Ford Men of Courage Detroit Barbershop Challenge, a popular program designed to educate and empower African American men. The challenge finalist is eligible to select a local nonprofit organization to receive a grant of $ 5,000.
Until August 1, owners of state-certified hair salons aged 18 and over can submit innovative claims as to why their salon should be recognized as a Ford Men of Courage store and what that would mean for their community.
“The challenge focuses on a keystone in African American communities that is the barber shop and encourages owners to use it as a launching pad to turn ideas into community outreach and success,” said Pamela Alexander , director of community development, Ford Motor Company Fund, according to a press release. “Detroit is a city filled with men who change and improve our world every day and we are thrilled to celebrate and honor them with this program. “
Up to three finalists will be selected to receive a Men of Courage hair salon makeover and compete in developing a community engagement program focused on education, entrepreneurship and empowerment of adults and youth.

Ford Fund will support their efforts by leveraging partnerships with the Charles H. Wright Museum and Microsoft to facilitate fun and engaging activities, including a workshop on How to Develop and “Rock Your LinkedIn Profile” and free coding lessons. .
Hair salons will also receive free mobile XBox units for community game nights and friendly competition between customers.
The Barbershop Challenge is designed to complement the upcoming exhibition, Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. The exhibition opens at the Charles H. Wright Museum this fall.
Created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, Men of Change is made possible with support from the Ford Motor Company Fund and features revolutionary African-American men such as Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, WEB Du Bois and Kendrick Lamar.
Their travels have altered the country’s history and culture through politics, sports, science, entertainment, business, religion and more.
