Karn, Living Legacy offers artifact value in MTG Dominaria United

0

Dominaria United is the start of a multiset conflict with the Phyrexians, and Karn returns as a key protagonist in the narrative.

One of the remaining Modern Age ties to Urza, Karn is an Artifact Planeswalker with a history of strong value-based cards. Karn will generally not overwhelm the opponent with creatures, but rather drown them in card advantage. This is why older Karn cards are usually found in control builds.

voxy revealed Karn, Living Legacy on Twitter. Karn, Living Legacy is a four-mana planeswalker that combines with dedicated artifact strategies.

Dominaria United releases September 1 on magic arena and magic onlinefollowed by a tabletop release on September 9.

Karn, Living Legacy

  • Mana Value: Four
  • Type: Karn Legendary Planeswalker
  • Rarity: mythical rare
  • Starting Loyalty: Four
  • First ability: +1: Creates a tapped Powerstone token.
  • Second ability: -1: Pay any amount of mana. look at that many cards from the top of your library, then put one of those cards into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in random order.
  • Third ability: -7: You get an emblem with “Press an untapped artifact you control: this emblem deals one damage to any target.”

Karn is a card that will be much stronger in future sets. This card synergizes heavily with Artifacts, which aren’t the focus of many major archetypes in Standard right now. However, with the coming brothers war together, many powerful Artifact cards should fit into the format.

The +1 is a solid ability. It creates an artifact and provides a ramp source. You can’t use mana to cast non-artifact spells, but it’s important to note that you can still use mana for activated and triggered abilities.

The -1 is difficult to assess. It’s not the best source of card draw, but it can be powerful if you can bend yourself with mana rocks before Karn enters the battlefield. Artifacts created by Karn can also help pay the -1. The ultimate isn’t that hard to hit at -7. It’s a good ability that should end the game quickly but doesn’t win the game like other Planeswalker ultimates.

Karn seems best suited for a large-scale artifact strategy that can flood the battlefield with tokens that can protect Karn. Karn will be a consistent source for generating artifacts in an Affinity shell.

Karn is unlikely to see meaningful play in Eternal formats. Each ability is too slow and is performed better by other cards. Pioneer, Modern, and Legacy are all too powerful for Karn to have any impact. Karn will be a useful piece in Standard and a great pickup in Limited.
