Saint Mary’s University drops 11 majors including English, history and art

Saint Mary’s University in Winona, Minn., announced on Tuesday that it is dropping 11 major programs as the college plans a shift toward business, technology and science amid declining enrollment.

More than half of the cut majors are part of the college’s School of Arts and Humanities. Among the discontinued majors are:

  • Actuarial Science
  • Art
  • English
  • Story
  • Personal services
  • International trade
  • Music
  • The music industry
  • Spanish
  • Theater
  • Theology

In a press release, the university says the move is intended to “better position itself financially for sustainability and long-term success as higher education continues to face increasing competition for fewer students.”

“We want to provide students with programs that are in demand, that have strong growth potential, and that many want to pursue now,” wrote Saint Mary’s President, Father James P. Burns, IVD, Ph.D. And, we align the programs we offer with our mission by answering the question: how can we best prepare our students for work, for a life of ethical service, for pursuing the highest good and truth in all things? by answering their questions about meaning and purpose? The goal is for our graduates to excel early in their careers, become future leaders in their fields, and use their special gifts to impact humanity.

The university says that since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 million fewer Americans are attending college – and university officials say they could worsen to 3 million over the next next decade.
